Double Vision: James Disney & Erik Stensland

September 20, 2022  |  Loveland, Colorado

For many years I've been a big fan of my friend James Disney, an incredible painter with a deep knowledge of every nook and cranny of Rocky Mountain National Park and an even deeper love for this place. In many ways he was Mr. Rocky Mountain National Park as he knew it better than almost anyone and also did so much for it's promotion and protection.

For a couple of years Jim had been telling me we needed to do a really high-quality exhibition together down at the gorgeous Loveland Museum/Gallery. I'd brushed off the idea as I wasn't sure how serious he was. Then, last November, while I was out photographing in New Mexico, I received a text saying that Jim had just gone into hospice, but he wanted to be certain that we made this joint show happen. So, I quickly drove back to Colorado, and we began planning it in cooperation with the Loveland Museum. We laid the foundation for what we wanted the show to be, a celebration of our two similar but different mediums and our shared love of Rocky Mountain National Park and the natural world. Just a couple of weeks after that initial meeting, cancer took his life.

Now, his wish is finally being fulfilled. Our joint exhibition has just opened in Loveland. It is a beautiful display showing some of his amazing work as well as about 22 of mine. They have also expanded the Jim Disney presentation to show case some of the many amazing things he did in art, adventure, environment, local politics, and life.

You can stop by on most days and see the exhibit or come down for our public reception on the evening of October 14th from 6-8pm. I'll be there on October 14th and would love to see as many of you as can make it.

The show runs through November 13th. Admission is $7 but is free on October 14th.
